Start your own vegetable garden

With the cost of food becoming ridiculous, why not build your own veggie patch? It’s not only rewarding but tastes great too!

What you need:

  • Garden bed or treated timber sleepers
  • Manure, Compost and Potting Mix
  • Snail & Slug Pellets
  • Seaweed solution
  • Mulch
  • Seedlings
  • Water
  • Labels and a Sharpe
  • Gloves

Step 1: Position Patch

When you position your patch, it is important to consider how much sun it will get during the day. To produce your produce healthy veggies, your patch will need at least six hours of sun per day.

A good thing to consider when positioning your patch is if it has access to water because it will need plenty of it.

Try and make sure it is sheltered and out of the wind as much as possible.

Step 2: Prepare Soil

Most veggies like fertile and well-draining soil. If you’re planting directly into the soil perhaps using some compost or cow manure as these will help give your veggies a great head start.

Step 3: Fill with Potting Mix

Once you have chosen your garden bed, make sure you fill it almost all the way up to the top. Once you’ve filled up your bed make sure you flatten out the soil evenly.

Step 4: Select Crops

Reminder: only plant what you would like to eat.

Purchase your desired seedlings.

Before planting, make sure you read the label on the seedling, so you know how far apart to plant them.

Step 5: Plant Vegetables

If you are using seedlings it’s always good to moisten the soil before removing from the punnet. Make a hole enough for the roots and carefully insert, then gently backfill. Follow any required instructions on the label.

Step 6: Water Seedlings

To promote root growth, water your seedlings with some seaweed solution. Read the label on the back to determine how much solution you need for your veggie garden.

To protect from pests like snails and slugs, use snail bait. You can always remove pests such as caterpillars by hand

Step 7: Mulch Garden Bed

Last step, place mulch in your garden bed for protection.

Step 8: Labels

While your veggies are growing it can be hard to notice the difference, so we recommend labelling your seedling, so you know which veggies are growing where.
